Heyn Engineering : Load Testing Services

Heyn Engineering provide load testing of lifting equipment across the UK and Ireland. As LEEA Members, all engineers are extensively trained and competent in all aspects of testing schedules and equipment. In addition to offering an online system for real-time access to Lifting Certifications for all equipment, automatic reminders are sent out to inform customers when their equipment was due for re-certification. This online portal is accessible at any time for auditing and review purposes.

Recently, Heyn engineers completed load testing on sluice gates on the River Bann in Castleroe, Northern Ireland. The gates act as a temporary dam across part of the river and are typically lifted in and out as required. The gates were moved using two wire rope hoists that operated in tandem on steel beams.

Heyn Engineers were required to perform proof load tests on an agreed schedule to confirm that the equipment was fit for purpose and to maintain the safety of the equipment and those working with it. These tests highlighted any issues with the safety of the equipment and advised customers if further action was required.

To perform a proof load test, engineers checked the stated capacity of the equipment and typically added 25% in excess of this weight for inspection by a qualified engineer. The inspection included checking for damage or deformation to the equipment and supporting steel structures, such as cracks, bent or twisted flanges, loose, missing, or distorted bolts, nuts, and clamps, as well as insecure or cracked welds. They also checked if the structure had moved in any way. In the case of beams, the deflection was inspected to ensure it was within the standard maximum allowed.

Once the Heyn Engineer was satisfied that the equipment had passed every part of the thorough inspection, new Proof Load Testing Certifications were issued for the equipment for the forthcoming period. This certified that the equipment was suitable and safe for purpose up to the maximum stated capacity of the equipment. Where any issues were identified, a report and advice were provided to the customer, and a plan was set in place to bring the equipment into compliance with the required safety regulations through either replacement or repair.
