Heyn Engineering Leads Historic Move of Spanish Armada Collection

At Heyn Engineering, we take great pride in tackling some of the most complex and delicate engineering challenges across Northern Ireland. Recently, our team had the honour of being the main contractor responsible for moving key pieces from the historic Spanish Armada collection from the Tower Museum in Derry to Belfast for restoration work.

This was not just another project; it was an opportunity to help safeguard centuries of history for future generations.

Precision Planning and Preparation

Our engineering team was on site for two days ahead of the move, preparing the artifacts for transport, ensuring all access points were clear, and overseeing every detail of the project management. With fragile and irreplaceable items involved, every step had to be carefully planned and executed.

One of the highlights of this project was the extraction of a cannon weighing over 2.5 tonnes, complete with its carriage and wheels, through a second-storey window. This required specialist equipment, precise engineering, and seamless teamwork to ensure the artifact was handled with the utmost care.

Another cannon presented an even greater challenge - removal from a third-storey window that was significantly smaller than the double-glazed window below. Our team applied innovative solutions to ensure the safe and secure extraction of this historic piece.

Protecting Fragile Artifacts

Among the most delicate items was a preserved wheel recovered from the ocean. Given its fragility, our team enlisted a specialist company that developed a specially designed encasement for transport, ensuring it arrived at its end location safely and intact.

Collaboration and Expertise

This project was a true team effort. We worked closely with other local contractors, pooling our knowledge and skills to deliver a complex and highly sensitive move. The success of this operation is a testament to the strength of collaboration and the expertise of all involved.

Protecting Heritage Through Engineering

At Heyn Engineering, we are proud to play our part in preserving history. The Spanish Armada collection is a vital link to our past, and we are delighted to have supported its safe journey for restoration.
