National Apprenticeship Week 2022 is taking place this year from 7th to 13th February and provides a great opportunity for businesses to celebrate their apprentices and showcase the opportunities that they can provide to people seeking an apprenticeship. At present, Heyn Handling Solutions employs seven young men on Apprenticeship programmes.
The Heyn Engineering division has historically offered apprenticeship places each year. It has been a great tool to use and some of our existing fully qualified engineers have come through the apprenticeship with the company and remained. In the Engineering team, there are currently 4 apprentices with progression from first to final year served of their time.
Our only Forklift division Apprentice is Brandon Lindsay. Brandon has been with Heyn Forktrucks now for 18 months and is an Apprentice Service Engineer. Brandon studies in college 1 day per week doing a course in Heavy Plant. He is mentored by the Service Manager, Ryan.
Overview of your role with Heyn?
I am normally out on site with the more senior engineers, carrying out servicing and repairs on forklifts. I also work in the workshop preparing trucks for going out when they have been sold, painting and cleaning them up.
How have you progressed over the last year of your apprenticeship?
I have worked on a wide range of makes and models of trucks and have been able to gain more hands on experience with the senior members of the team. I'm looking forward to passing Level 2 Heavy Plant and moving into my third year.
Would you recommend an apprenticeship as a career route? If so, why?
Yes most definitely, it's a great way to learn a trade and get paid while learning on-the-job.
